We are proud to announce that Tom Lowman, Bolton’s retired Chief Actuary, has been recognized with the Conference of Consulting Actuaries’ (CCA) Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Annual Meeting on October 28. This prestigious honor celebrates Tom’s unwavering commitment and remarkable contributions to both the CCA and the actuarial consulting profession throughout his career. Please join us in congratulating Tom on this well-deserved recognition of his impactful journey.
The CCA Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to those who have made significant volunteer contributions to the actuarial field and the CCA. Tom’s dedication to the profession was evident, and he was joined by his wife, Lynn, and brother, John, for this meaningful celebration.
Throughout his career, Tom championed the value of volunteerism, encouraging others to invest in the profession’s future. In his acceptance speech, he inspired early-career actuaries with the following advice: “Working with clients is great. Remember that volunteering is also important. You really grow in your career working alongside actuaries from other firms while serving our profession.”
Recognized nationally as a leading expert in public sector pension plans, Tom was a sought-after resource by the CCA, other actuarial organizations, GASB, and national media. His contributions as a thought leader, particularly through publishing and public speaking, significantly advanced understanding within the pension actuarial community. Tom played a vital role in the development of the CCA Public Plans Community's white paper "Actuarial Funding Policies and Practices for Public Pension Plans" (2014) and recently supported the creation of Whitepaper 2.0 by recommending Jordan McClane to the working group. His expertise has also been called upon in high-profile cases before state legislatures, courts, and even the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
Tom has furthered the profession by ensuring open access to the actuarial standards-setting process, sharing his personal insights and notes with fellow CCA members. His dedication extends beyond organizational contributions; Tom has offered pro bono support to individuals facing pension issues through the Pension Rights Center. The American Academy of Actuaries recognized him for this work, highlighting his dedication in an article in Contingencies magazine.
Please join us in congratulating Tom Lowman on this milestone achievement and in honoring his profound impact on the actuarial community.
